The process behind designing the Bee collection

Bee Mug banner

The Bee Collection began with a simple objective: to create a mug that was comfortable to use and easy to store.

From the start, stacking became an important part of the design. The collection uses a series of horizontal ribs that allow the pieces to nest securely, making their purpose immediately understandable. There is no need to think twice about how they should be arranged; the form naturally guides the user.

The biggest challenge was finding the right relationship between these ribs and the smooth surfaces between them. The ribs were essential for stacking, but they also had a direct impact on how the object felt in the hand.

While the collection moves away from the conventional form of a mug, it remains connected to familiar archetypes through its cylindrical body, material and proportions. The use of porcelain, particularly in the white version, reinforces this sense of familiarity. At the same time, the coloured glazes help balance the more distinctive geometry, creating an object that feels both recognisable and new.

The Bee Collection was developed primarily through physical prototypes. Comfort could only be evaluated by holding the object, using it and adjusting it repeatedly. No matter how practical or visually appealing the collection became, it would ultimately fail if it was not comfortable to use.

The development was carried out in close collaboration with Polar Premium. Working with porcelain introduced a number of technical challenges, from manufacturing constraints to durability requirements. Throughout the process, it was essential that the collection remained as robust and reliable as possible without compromising the original design intention.
